How to make Coffee

2021

Background

The goal was to create both an enthralling tutorial and a VFX test in a short video. It was also a prime opportunity to test the render time and performance of my newly acquired GPU (which I somehow was able to get during the shortage).

Results

The video was first planned, storyboarded and pre-vised with the effects I wanted to use in mind. The set preparation, filming, practical FX and audio recording took place over two days, occupying half of my living room. Post production was completed in a week, it consisted of editing, coloring, VFX and SFX.

VFX
Some of the methods I used was 3D-tracking, volumetric lights, rotoscoping and custom lens flares.
6 Shots
The video is made out of six different shots, four of which are effects shots.
Self Produced
I produced the video myself, with help from Alex Utterberg, my cameraman/leaf blower-extraordinaire.
Audio
The music and custom sound design is a key part of the experience.

VFX process

One of the shots with the most VFX is the possession shot. Some of the fx in order below: Color correction & time remapping, 3D tracking plates of my own eyes, 3D tracking volumetric lights & custom optical flares.
